Frequently Asked Questions on Our Products & Services
  • How does the style of training differ from a Metro First Aid course? to Top
The Extreme Medical Course places an emphasis on ‘thinking out side of the box’ , and provides realistic ‘hands on’ training that aims to reinforce and give students confidence in the skills that they have just learnt. The use of Moulage and life-like scenarios not only add an air of realism to the training but also enhance the First Aider’s understanding and appreciation of their new skills. The assessment phase of the WMI system allows for a greater appreciation of the real dangers facing someone caring for an injured colleague.

The constant focus on the need for PPE during treatment reflects industry standards and ensures good practice. The course introduces various patient assessment systems including SAMPLE and head-totoe. The observation and evaluation of patient vital signs is also taught on this course .Common medical conditions and identification and treatment of traumatic injuries are also covered. The WMI syllabus also concentrates on ‘hands on spinal’ precautions for every patient presenting with a suitable method of injury [MOU]. The WMI ‘Focused Spine Assessment’ tool has been developed by their Medical Board and has proved invaluable in situations where the First Aider is more than one hour away from professional medical aid. All forms of patient movement are ‘Spine Safe’ and include several techniques for both single and multiple rescuer, in fact the emphasis is on examination of the patient rather than a hands off approach to ensure a proper assessment of the patient. WMI trainers are experienced in their field, and not just ‘First Aid Instructors’ that can deliver a lesson.

The syllabus has been specifically modified to Australian standards and conditions.

  • Is the course the same as Occupational First Aid? to Top
No, the Occupational First Aid course is designed and delivered especially for those employees who will be running a Medical Centre or First Aid room in a conventual environment. Unlike the Remote Area WMI course, it also requires the student to have a current Senior First Aid certificate. It is a good form of instruction but has little opportunity for realistic simulation and does not focus on spinal control or protection from the environment as a basic consideration, a key factor to the WMI system.

In Conclusion, the Extreme Medical Remote Area First Aid and Survival Course is ideal for those employees who operate or travel outside the Metro area or who wish to attain a higher level of competency and a globally recognized qualification.

  • Do all staff need this training? to Top
The WMI Remote Area First Aid & Survival course was designed especially for the Mining Industry after recognizing a need to provide extra skills for those employees that work or travel outside the metro area. These employees may enter areas where communication is limited to Satellite phones or VHF radio. Advanced techniques have been included in the syllabus to provide safe and effective treatment for a number of medical and traumatic conditions that may occur in areas not immediately supported by an ambulance service. This compares for example to workers that have immediate medical aid on site or within a Metro ambulance ride; in these situations courses such as the St John Ambulance ‘Basic Life Support’, ‘Senior First Aid’ or Occupational First Aid’ may be more appropriate as the emphasis is on calling 000 and activating the EMS.

  • Can you customise the course for our specific needs and conditions? to Top
Yes. Our course staff can tailor the content of the course to your specific requirements as long as the basic components are met. This usually involves our staff writing specific scenarios relevant to your companies field. As an example - We wouldn't include a remote bush roll over scenario in a course aimed at the security industry and vice versa wouldn't include a security / crowd related scenario to a mining company.
